Rugby League
Captain’s name?
Matt Ross
What’s it like to be a part of your club?
Its a really good fun atmosphere at the club lots of banter flying about but, we can switch on be professional when we have too. It’s my final year and I can’t think of a better club I could have been involved with for 4 years.
What does the Varsity series mean to you?
Yeah it’s a big deal, we (Rugby League) haven’t won it for two years, so we really want it this year! A lot of lads are playing their last game for Trent and want to go out with a win. The series itself I really enjoy because you get a chance to watch sports you never normally would.
Why should students come and watch your team?
It’s going to be a fast, physical, high intensity game. We are the series opener so we need as much support as possible to make sure we go 1-0 up in the series!
What’s your score prediction?
It’s hard to say, they’re in the league below so we don’t get to see them play, they’ve won every game by a big margin this year so it’s going to be tight. I’m backing us to get the win but think it’ll be a 10 point ball game.

Best Thing Ever
Men’s Lacrosse
Captain’s name?
Thomas Cooper
What’s it like being a part of your club?
The lacrosse society has been my social hub ever since I moved to study here. Over the three years here what I’ve enjoyed most is watching our team become one of the best university teams in the country. If you ever want to try something different and meet some great people then you need not look further than lacrosse corner on an ocean Wednesday.
What does the Varsity series mean to you?
I personally know a couple of the UoN lads from back home so what started out as occasional joke telling is now a full on war. We will be bringing home the win at varsity.
Why should students come and watch your team?
Mainly for the symbolic Maori war dance our head coach demonstrates just before our games. Goosebumps from the back of my neck to the top of my feet thinking about it.
What’s your score prediction?
Trent to win in three straight sets
Women’s Lacrosse
Captain’s name?
Rosie Jones
What’s it like being a part of your club?
It’s a lot of fun, both sports and socially.
What does the Varsity series mean to you?
It’s a great addition to the normal sporting events. Gives you something to work for after BUCS games are over.
Why should students come and watch your team?
Everyone plays to a crowd! It’s also a good chance to showcase lacrosse as it’s a minority sport.
What’s your score prediction?
Notts 1s are the league above and have some really great players so it’s more than likely to be a loss. If we were to play a well matched team it would be more interesting!
Squash
Captain’s Name?
Adam Turner
What’s it like being a part of your club?
The squash club has great family atmosphere where everyone looks out for one another. We get great support from the rest of the club at our BUCS fixtures and no doubt varsity will be an even bigger turn out.
What does the Varsity series mean to you?
The varsity series is a big deal to the squash club as it’s a great chance for many of our players to get the experience of playing in front of crowd of 100+ people. We have always had a strong friendly rivalry with uni of especially after beating them 4-1 last week in local league.
Why should students come and watch your team?
The atmosphere will be amazing. There’s going to be a full crowd at uni of with tiered seating and a full glass court making it great spectacle to watch. We took them to brink last year losing 3-2 so with some hard training hopefully we can get the big win on the day!
Scoreline prediction?
3-2 Trent in a nail biter!
